River Droplet art installation at Frampton

We welcome award-winning Dorset-based Earth Scientist Dr Anjana Khatwa to the River Droplet to talk to us about the Wessex chalk landscape and to share her passion for rock.

Anjana is a time traveller, who uses clues locked away in rocks, fossils and landscapes to reveal the hidden mysteries and stories about ancient life on earth. She will explain how this unique landscape has come to be, what’s beneath our feet and explain how flint (which features in so many Wessex walls) is formed.

We will also mark the sunset on the Autumn Equinox, celebrating this turning point of the year with live music and by illuminating the River Droplet as the night falls.

Come and enjoy this beautiful chandelier of chalk-stream water as the sun sets. As the day light fades, our lights will make the 500+ bottles glow.

Free hot drinks and cake. This is a free event, no booking needed, just turn up at 6pm and stay as long or as little as you like. Chalk talk will start at 6.15pm.

About River Droplet

We are delighted to announce that a new temporary art installation has been created at the Millennium Green, Frampton (just north of Dorchester) and will be open until 1st October 2024.

‘River Droplet’ is a temporary installation that shines a light on the unique character of chalk streams in Dorset.

Created by artist Lorna Rees and architect Amanda Moore, the installation consists of 500 bottles of water taken from the adjacent River Frome. The chalky bed of the river can be seen by the sediment in each of the bottles.

Chalk streams are perfect for the production of watercress, which is grown locally and shipped around the UK and across the world. The ‘River Droplet’ installation will be brought to life with events and recordings that explore the story of watercress production and what makes chalk streams so special.

You can take a seat within the installation and listen to the recordings, join in the events or simply sit and enjoy the sights and sounds of the glorious River Frome!

‘River Droplet’ has been commissioned by the Dorset National Landscape team as the first installation for the Sitting Spaces project. Sitting Spaces aims to encourage a wider range of people to visit the countryside by creating temporary structures to sit and enjoy the special qualities of the area.
