Working to improve and reduce the number of signs in the natural landscape
We’re working hard to improve and reduce the number of signs in the natural landscape. Where there is a good reason for a sign, we work with partners such as Parish Councils, to replace and improve any old, out of date ones. A lot of this work has focused on the Jurassic Coast, including the East Devon section.
Working with Purbeck Community Rail Partnership, we had four signs installed at Wareham station which showcase Dorset National Landscape and the Jurassic Coast to raise awareness of the special qualities of the area. The signs also signpost to the bus stops, encouraging people to use public transport to explore the area.
We are keen to install similar signs at all stations within the National Landscape!
People enjoying the new Fossil Roots panel at Budleigh Salterton, funded by Devon County Council and the Geologists’ Association Curry Fund. This vibrant panel tells the fascinating story of the fossil roots which can be clearly seen in the sandstone cliff behind the panel. These plant roots have been preserved for 245 million years and formed during a time known as the Triassic Period, when the entire area was a desert. Fossil roots like these are known as Rhizocretions.
