February 2022 update
The end of the project is on the horizon, and lots of works have been completed ready for the release of animals onto the Grazing Unit later in the spring.
Progress on Infrastructure
- All cattle grid bypass gates fitted and speed limit signage installed
- All fencing complete including joining up to cattle grids, creating the external boundary of the unit
- Three substantial forestry gates fitted
- Parking areas created along the Hartland-Norden road to minimise the amount of ad-hoc parking on sensitive land along other parts of the road
Slow Down! New Maximum Speed of 20mph signs have been installed.

Ecological Monitoring
- Data monitoring arrangements refined and a monitoring calendar established for future ecological monitoring
- Extra ‘trail’ cameras purchased and deployed across parts of the Unit by Bournemouth University to enhance ecological monitoring
Tourism & Engagement
- Sustainable Tourism Plan co-created with local businesses and stakeholders launched at a RSPB hosted event
- Website launched for Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve (NNR)
- Updated NNR leaflet published and available through multiple locations
- Interpretation signage being installed in March at key access points around the NNR
