Working with the community in Swanage to better understand and improve the Swan Brook and its neighbours.
The Swan Brook is classified as ‘Poor’ by the Environment Agency, so is need of a little TLC. Sustainable Swanage hosted a meeting back in winter 2023 that introduced the issues facing the brook and set out a challenge to make it better. Off the back of this, the Swanage Streams Partnership formed, with a vision to restore the Swan Brook, Ulwell Stream and their neighbours.
The partnership is made up of the National Trust, who work with their tenants throughout the catchment; Swanage Town Council, who are keen to see flood risk reduction and environmental improvements to the streams that flow through Swanage; Planet Purbeck, who are helping deliver excellent community engagement on a range of environmental issues in the areal and Dorset National Landscape, who provide a link to the wider community-led river movement in Dorset.
The partnership launched at an event at Swanage School on the 26th November 2024, where we brought together our understanding of the issues faced by the catchment, and a plan to do something about it.
You can read a detailed report on the issues below. You can also find out more about the work of the partnership on the Planet Purbeck website. A host of events are planned for the coming months, so do keep an eye out, or sign up to their newsletter.
