A section of the Wareham Two Rivers Route has recently undergone significant improvements, delivered through Dorset National Landscape’s Access for All funding in partnership with Dorset Council.
The Wareham Two Rivers Walks are short, circular trails following footpaths and quiet roads alongside the rivers Frome and Piddle at Wareham. The rivers Frome and Piddle flow through Wareham into Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world.
A section of the route that was muddy and often waterlogged has been resurfaced and enhanced with a new boardwalk, providing safe, consistent access to the River Frome. The improvements also open up attractive views across Wareham Meadows, creating a more enjoyable experience for all visitors.
The upgraded section of the route takes around 15–20 minutes to walk one way, with opportunities to pause, appreciate the landscape and enjoy the surrounding wildlife.
This section is now fully accessible to wheelchair users and people with limited mobility, enabling more visitors to experience this tranquil part of the natural environment. We hope to secure further investment to extend accessibility improvements along the route in future. Several car parks in Wareham offer disabled parking spaces. Connegar Lane Car Park provides flat, level access to the start of the improved route.

This project is part of Access for All improvements, made possible by financial support from Defra. We have so far invested nearly £500,000 to upgrade rights of way and create new routes which are accessible to everyone, including wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.
